Mask Fit Testing

Yes, according to AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975:3:2023, mask fit testing is essential for anyone who needs to wear a tight-fitting respirator as part of comprehensive health and safety protocols.

Starting from September 2024, new regulations concerning silica dust explicitly mandate mask fit testing.

Individuals required to wear tight-fitting respirators, such as disposable N95/P2 masks or reusable half-face and full-face respirators, must undergo a mask fit test. This ensures the respirator provides the necessary protection. However, loose-fitting powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) do not require such testing.

In line with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and AS/NZS ISO 16975:3:2023, mask fit testing should be carried out before using a tight-fitting respirator for the first time to ensure proper seal and suitability.

It should also be done annually, and whenever there are changes to the respirator's brand, model, or size.

Additionally, if the wearer's facial features change due to factors like dental surgery or significant weight loss, a new fit test is necessary.

Safe Fit provides fit testing services at half-day and full-day rates, along with emergency fit testing options. Please reach out to us to discuss your specific needs and obtain a quote.

At Safe Fit, our quotes are fixed-price with no hidden or additional costs, ensuring straightforward budgeting for businesses.

To comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and ISO 16975-3 Standards, you must be clean-shaven, with no stubble, goatees, or beards, as facial hair can compromise the seal of the respirator.

Fit tests will not be conducted if any facial hair interferes with the mask's sealing surface.

If you cannot or choose not to shave, consider using loose-fitting powered air purifying respirators.

Additionally, avoid smoking, vaping, or eating (including mints) 30 minutes before the fit test.

Bring other protective equipment like eyewear, earmuffs, and hard hats to ensure compatibility with your respirator.
